Today, I've learned that when in a job interview at a Japanese company, the words, "Now we would like you to undertake a small Japanese test to check your Japanese level" actually means, "We would like you to gather all your hopes and dreams of you ever working for us, and let them die." FML

If they didn't specify before the interview that you need to know Japanese for the role then that indicates that they're not a good company to work for. That or they designed the interview specifically for one person, Regardless, every interview is a chance, take enough and one will favour you, chin up my friend.

Since it is a Japanese company when did you think you wouldn't have to understand Japanese? Especially interviewing for I'm guessing a potential position that might involve Japanese clients?

OP may have studied to pass N5 or even higher (Japanese proficiency test) but trying to memorise more than two thousand kanji and know the meaning of kanji in certain situations is hard, especially if they were not expecting it!

I mean it's probably for the best OP if they gave you the job and then threw you into a bunch of Japanese concepts you couldn't understand it would be horrible. You should ask them to keep you in their records and try learning some more!
